Simple Steps For Overcoming Any Addiction

September 17th, 2007 by Donovan · No Comments

Simple, but not easy.

The key to overcoming addictions is breaking the habit “triggers” that will be present.

Here are some simple steps you can follow to make breaking through the hard time of cracking the addiction that much easier. Whether you’re addicted to coffee, smoking, or your TiVo here they are.

Spot “Triggers”

Most addictions are based around certain habits. If you come into work at 7:30am, and you smell that brew of coffee, you’re more than likely to get that cup of coffee. Smoking is often triggered by a cup of coffee or a drink at the bar. Whatever you’re addiction, find these triggers and identity them all. This will give you the best offense with a good defense.

Avoid “Triggers”

Now that you’ve spotted triggers, you now want to avoid them. In the Pavlov Dogs story the owner would ring the bell and the dogs would start salivating because of the programming they went through as Pavlov associated the sound of the bell with food. Avoid your triggers so you can break the normal routine that leads to the trigger, and trying not to dwell on them. Once you reach the trigger, resistance is almost futile. But if you can never feel that trigger, you’ve got a great chance.

Keep Your Life Insanely Busy

Have no downtime. Keep constantly engaged in your passions, like sports or friends. By keeping busy you are getting your body active, which always helps addiction, but… it will also keep your mind away from your addiction which is most important. Don’t let your mind wander back to the addiction (it will).

By following these steps, you’ll be on the road to freedom.
